Module 8: Learning Management System: Edmodo

Part A: Learning Management System (LMS) Set-Up

I used Edmodo to create my learning management system. Click on the link to access the sign in page. You will need to enter the group code: 7i9pyj when you sign up or after you sign in to access my Social Studies 20 group page. Below is a screenshot of what my teacher page looks like.

Part B: Learning Management System (LMS) Reflection

I chose to use the quiz and poll tools in Edmodo to enhance face to face learning. Both of these tools I used to encourage some pre-class feedback in order to better inform myself as the teacher about where the class is at in their contextual understanding of nationalism and historical awareness. I created the quiz in order to quickly assess how much background knowledge the students are currently bringing to the class, and to what degree they may have already been exposed to some of the content we will be covering. This will better inform me as a teacher as to what degree I will need to work to explain concepts and better understand my students’ readiness profile. The poll I used to encourage in-class discussion about what student’s pre-conceived notions are about Canadian nationalism and identity, a huge theme in Social Studies 20. My goal is to get the students thinking about these themes early and to have this opinion poll be the starting point for discussion about what ideas constitute Canadian nationalism.

One of the apps that I chose was “Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat by Winston Churchill”, produced by StudySync. This app seemed particularly relevant to Social Studies 20 because it could be used as a case study in the role of Nationalism in war, the role of leaders espousing Nationalistic ideals through war, or as an example of ultranationalism. This app would enhance class discussion through the discussion platforms and questions that are already built in to the app. lesson plan. I would use this app to expose the students to the media representation of Churchill’s speech and the history lesson and then bring it back to an in-class discussion based on the app’s discussion questions. This app. provides a variety of multimedia representations (video, text to speech, text) that will enhance student understanding which will enhance class discussion.
